Art Deco

Art Déco is well known as an art style and design movement, which has detached the so-called Art Nouveau in France and the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) in Germany. Art Déco was named by an exhibition in Paris (France) in the year 1925 with the title "Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes".

The last surviving examples of Art Déco are spread worldwide in architecture and arts. The last well-known and largest examples of architecture are the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building in New York City or the city Reims in France.

This Movement was popular from 1925 till 1940 and was quasi a movement between the two wars. Art Déco is characterized by functional, glamorous and modern style and was affected by the movements “Bauhaus” and “Functionalism”. It was a period with a mixture of many different movements and styles like Cubism, Modernism, Constructivism and Neoclassical.

The materials, which are dominating in manufacturing Art Déco designs are steel, stainless steel, aluminium, inlaid wood and also exotic materials like zebra skin. Various artists designed different furniture, paintings, glasses and dishes, pictures and sculptures, all dominated by typical Art Déco characteristics, like plane and geometric forms and straight lines.
