Mythology is a Greek term and means as much as telling a story. The mythology deals with the analysis and importance of myth in religion, literature and science. It contains the scientific exploration of stories about heroes and the Greek gods and the beginning and the end of the world.
Mythology is supposed to bring pieces of wisdom to the public by telling and explaining the stories about the live and the relationships between the heroes and the Greek gods.
There are different motives which are often used in artworks ore literature. One is the illustration of Oedipus and the Sphinx painted by the French artist Gustav Moreau.
An other famous motive is the fight between the Minotaur and the well known Greek hero Theseus. This motive was used by Pablo Picasso among others. A third well known motive is the triumph of Bacchus.
Not only the named motives are popular in arts. Single gods like “Ikarus” or “Zeus” got used as motives of decoration on art subjects like vases, at house walls or mosaics. The most popular exposition of “Ikarus” was created and painted by the artist Henri Matisse.
The themes of mythology are nowadays often used in crating beautiful sculptures or plastics or in poster printings.
